Self-Reliance - Ralph Waldo Emerson - Summary & Full Essay

Key Points:

  • Urges his readers to follow their individual will instead of conforming to social expectations.
  • Emphasizes following one’s own voice rather than an intermediary's, such as the church.
  • He encourages his readers to be honest in their relationships with others.
  • Posts the effects of self-reliance: altering religious practices, encouraging Americans to stay home and develop their own culture, and focusing on individual rather than societal progress.
  • Merriam-Webster defines self-reliance as "reliance on one's own efforts and abilities."
In broader contexts, self-reliance can be viewed as an individual's confidence in their capacity to manage their own life, make their own decisions, and provide for themselves without excessively depending on others. This concept is often celebrated in various cultures and philosophies for fostering independence, resilience, and personal growth.

SELF-RELIANCE

original start poem:

"Ne te quæsiveris extra."

"Man is his own star; and the soul that canRender an honest and a perfect man,Commands all light, all influence, all fate;Nothing to him falls early or too late. Our acts our angels are, or good or ill,Our fatal shadows that walk by us still."
translated to modern English by Copilot AI
“Do not seek outside yourself."
(from Latin; i
n other words, it encourages introspection and looking within for answers)

"Man is his own star; within his soul,
He shapes an honest, perfect self, a whole.
Commands he light, fate's intricate design,
No timing early or too late aligns.
Our deeds, like angels, guide us on our way,
Or shadows dark that linger night and day.

first paragraph
I read the other day some verses written by an eminent painter which were original and not conventional. The soul always hears an admonition in such lines, let the subject be what it may. The sentiment they instill is of more value than any thought they may contain. To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men,—that is genius
a modern English translation:

“I recently read some verses written by a renowned painter that were original and unconventional. The soul always perceives a lesson in such lines, regardless of the subject matter. The impact they leave is more valuable than any specific idea they convey. To trust your own thoughts, to believe that what resonates with you in your innermost being holds true for all humanity—that is genius.

"Here are Kenneth Good’s seven steps to winning:

  1. Focus on the goal:
    Bullseye all immediate objectives
    into a single goal.
  2. Project the direct line:
    Survey the straightest,
simplest way for you to reach that single goal.
  3. Fix a definite date for arrival:
    Set a deadline.
  4. Schedule a program for daily delivery of achievement:
    Keep working consistently
to bring you closer to your goal by the fixed date.
  5. Control your rate of progress:
Regularly compare your progress with the pre-arranged schedule,
similar to a railroad conductor checking if you’re on time.
  6. Deliver from within:
Use both physical and emotional self-operation
—the greatest power you’re capable of producing.
  7. Reduce resistance from without:
    Present your project advantageously
    to overcome external obstacles.

Anyone willing to effectively follow these seven steps
is virtually guaranteed to succeed in any undertaking."

prompt> US Declaration of Independence, Dr. Seuss style

"When in the course of human events,
It becomes quite clear, with no pretense,
That folks must part, and go their way,
To form a new land, hip-hip-hooray!

We hold these truths, oh so dear,
That all are equal, far and near.
Endowed with rights, we all possess,
Life, liberty, and happiness.

Governments are made, you see,
To keep us safe and keep us free.
But if they fail and cause us pain,
It’s time to start all over again.

So here we are, with hearts so bold,
To tell the world, our story told.
The King of Britain, oh so mean,
Has caused us grief, he’s quite the scene.

He won’t approve our laws, oh dear,
He keeps us down, year after year.
He taxes us without consent,
And leaves us feeling quite discontent.

So now we say, enough’s enough,
We’re breaking free, though times are tough.
We’ll form a nation, strong and true,
With hopes and dreams, for me and you.

We pledge our lives, our fortunes too,
To this great cause, we will pursue.
And with a cheer, we now declare,
Independence, beyond compare!"

book: What To Say When You Talk To Your Self

This book has very similar philosophy to techniques of Tony Robbins,
while providing a bit more "scientific", while simple, explanations.

What To Say When You Talk To Your Self - Kindle edition by Helmstetter, Shad. Self-Help Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.

Shad Helmstetter, Ph.D., is the best-selling author of more than a dozen books in the field of personal growth.

quotes from the book

  • The more you think about yourself in a certain way,
the more you will think about yourself in that same certain way!

  • The human brain will do anything possible you tell it to do,
if you tell it often enough and strongly enough!

  • The brain simply believes what you tell it most.
And what you tell it about you, it will create. It has no choice.

Life is driven by programming, conditioning.
Bad programs, bad life.
Best change: by self-talk

  1. Thoughts turn into electrical impulses, which in turn become actions.
  2. To create the life we want, we must take a step back and reprogram our mind.
  3. Understanding how self-talk works is the first step to reprogramming your mind.

Chapter 8: 5-steps sequence that controls our success or failure

1. Behavior: what we DO or do NOT DO; our ACTIONS determine our RESULTS
in most cases, right actions produce right results
WHY we do what we do, or we do not do? The reason is...

2. Feelings: every action we take is filtered by our feelings, what we do and how well we do it.
WHAT creates the feelings? It is by accident? The feeling are determined by...

3. Attitudes: the perspective how we see our life. Good or bad.
Good attitude is essential for achievement of any kind.
WHERE we get our attitude? Are we born with it? The attitudes are controlled by...

4. Beliefs: what we believe affects our attitude.
It does not need to be true, we just need to believe that it is true
to affects us, our attitudes => feelings => actions => results
If you believe or not in yourself will affect your results, will become true for you.
WHAT makes us believe? Is it handed to us, or we create it ourselves? Beliefs are created by...

5. Programming: we believe what we are "programmed" to believe, our conditioning.
Does not matter if it is true or false, right or wrong, its result is what we "believe".
What we are fed from outside world is creating natural "cause and effect" sequence.

Programming => Beliefs => Attitudes => Feelings => Actions => Results

So to change results, we need to start with self-programming!

Chapter 9: 5 levels of self-talk
